Stellar Masses

چکیده

Dependence of other stellar parameters on mass The Russell–Vogt theorem states that, if we know a star’s mass and its CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, we can use the laws of physics to determine all of its other properties: its luminosity, its radius, its temperature and density profiles, and how these properties change with time. (We know that this is a slight simplification; for instance, the amount of net ANGULAR MOMENTUM will also affect a star’s structure and evolution.) Compared with the possible range of masses a star may have ((0.08– 150)M⊙), there is only modest variation possible in the initial composition, and thus it is primarily a star’s mass at birth which determines the basic essentials of its structure and future life. Some of the properties of stars are given in table 1 as a function of stellar mass for stars on the main sequence, the core H-burning phase that accounts for 90% of a star’s life. These values have been taken from stellar models computed with a composition that is initially solar. We list the stellar parameters at the beginning and end of the main-sequence lifetimes, except for the lowest-mass stars, for which we adopt the parameters corresponding to an age of 1 Gyr, by which time these stars are stably burning hydrogen. Generally the behavior of the stellar parameters with stellar mass is quite different for the higher-mass stars ((25–120) M⊙) than for solar-type stars ((0.8–1.2) M⊙). The dependence of luminosity on stellar mass is shown in figure 1. This mass–luminosity relationship is considered one of the most fundamental descriptions of stellar properties; the ability to reproduce this by stellar models was one of the great vindications of theory (see also HERTZSPRUNG–RUSSELL DIAGRAM). EDDINGTON first demonstrated that radiative diffusion in stars requires that the stellar luminosity will depend on mass roughly as the fourth power, i.e. L ~ M. However, it is clear from figure 1 that no single exponent describes the dependence of luminosity on mass over the entire range of stellar masses. If we consider different mass ranges we would find that the following are good approximations: and

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The Relationship between Stellar and Halo Masses of Disk Galaxies at z = 0 . 2 −

We present the results of a study to determine the co-evolution of the virial and stellar masses for a sample of 83 disk galaxies between redshifts z = 0.2 − 1.2. The virial masses of these disks are computed using measured maximum rotational velocities from Keck spectroscopy and scale lengths from Hubble Space Telescope imaging. We compute stellar masses based on stellar population synthesis m...

Mass-loss predictions and stellar masses of early-type stars

We show that the stellar masses implied by our predictions of the wind properties of massive stars are in agreement with masses derived from evolution theory and from direct measurements using spectroscopic binaries, contrary to previous attempts to derive masses from wind theory.

The Geometry of Karbandi in Persian Architecture; Response to the Challenges of Conventional and Stellar Karbandi

Karbandi is one of the original and ancient arched elements in Persian architecture which is formed based on a network with harmonic geometry and in addition to architectural function, it also has structural behavior. However, there are ambiguities about the geometry of this architectural element that should be addressed with targeted research. One of these ambiguities is to determine how the g...

Relativistic Stellar Models with Quadratic Equation of State

In this paper, we have obtained and presented new relativistic stellar configurations considering an anisotropic fluid distribution with a charge distribution and a gravitational potential Z(x) that depends on an adjustable parameter. The quadratic equation of state based on Feroze and Siddiqui viewpoint is used for the matter distribution. The new solutions can be written in terms of elementar...

The Relationship between Stellar and Black-hole Mass in Submillimeter Galaxies

We analyze deep X-ray, optical and mid-infrared Spitzer observations of the CDF-N/GOODS-N region to study a sample of 13 submillimeter-detected galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts (median z = 2.2). These galaxies are among the most active and massive at this epoch. We find evidence for a power-law correlation between the estimated stellar and X-ray luminosity, implying that masses of the blac...
